Packing Tips For Self-Movers
Need some
help packing?
Now that you are organized and have all of your moving
checklists, let's talk about some packing tips.
• Get rid of all clutter
* Make sure to have your checklists handy so that you
know what items to pack and which items to keep separated (necessities).
* Collect and purchase moving boxes. Online sources will ship your boxes directly to you, without
any shipping fees. You can find used boxes
at your local store. You might also see
your neighbor move into your parcel tape neighborhood by a moving firm. You will soon see a lot of empty boxes as they move in to
your neighborhood.
You can put clothes and other soft items (like towels)
in drawers of your dresser drawers when packing bedrooms. Be sure to take out all jewelry, photos, clippers, pens and
any other small items. They could easily
fall from the drawers if the dresser is tilted while being carried.
* Wardrobe boxes are also known as bedroom boxes. These boxes are tall and sturdy, with a metal hang bar at
the top that can be used to move all your clothes.
* Do not pack bathrooms, laundry rooms or kitchens.
The Do NOT Pack List (on our site) will show you what items to avoid packing. You want everything to go smoothly, without any damage, or
worse, an explosion.
* If you are moving, you may not know how to properly
pack a moving container. Fold down the top
flaps when making a moving container. This
is only applicable to new moving boxes. If
you are using a used box, the tabs will have been removed to allow the box to
be closed after it has been packed. Flip
it over, close the bottom flaps but don't lock them. Finally, apply several
strips of packing tape (about 2-3 should suffice). Now you can fill it!
Mirror cartons or picture boxes are another type of
moving box that many people don't know about. They come in many sizes to
pack large paintings, mirrors and flat wall decorations. Our website has a series of photos that will show you how to
pack these items. The contents of the
carton are quite obvious. The important
part is the wrapping and sealing.
* I believe the most important tip is to remember that
the heavier an item, the smaller the container. This means that you shouldn't stuff a diapers bag with
books. You can't move it!
* The garage It's
okay, it's not that bad! Start in the
corner and work your way around until you reach the end. !
It's like putting together a puzzle. Sometimes it works perfectly, sometimes not. You can fill the hole with paper if necessary. It is not worth your time to worry about it. ;-)
I make up three boxes: a book box, a 3 cube and a 4
cube. If an item is too big for the 3
cube, it can be put into the 4.5 cube. Remember:
The smaller the box, the heavier the item.
Do not make the 4.5-cube boxes so heavy that no one
can lift them. If you have to place a
heavier item in the carton, then finish it off using lighter items like paint
trays, plastic sheets, or plastic flower pots.
